Newcastle opened ‘first formal contacts’ yesterday for signing – Wednesday saw leap forward

Over the past week, Italian media has been buzzing with speculation that Bologna may lose out on signing Toulouse’s Logan Costa to Newcastle United. Reports initially surfaced three days ago from Il Resto del Carlino, indicating that Toulouse preferred negotiating with the Magpies over the Serie A club.

On Wednesday, the same outlet highlighted that Bologna was anxiously waiting to see if Newcastle would make a decisive move for the 23-year-old defender. That concern appears to be well-founded, as Thursday’s edition of Corriere di Bologna reports that Newcastle has made significant progress in their pursuit of Costa.

According to the latest update, Newcastle United initiated their first formal contacts with Toulouse on Wednesday, signaling their intent to secure the Cape Verde international. Costa, who has less than two years remaining on his contract, is valued by his club at €18m to €20m.

While Bologna is reportedly far from meeting Toulouse’s financial demands, they are actively exploring alternative options. Meanwhile, Newcastle seems well-positioned to meet the asking price, though there remains some skepticism. Some believe that Newcastle’s involvement could be a strategic move to pressure Bologna into upping their offer.

As the transfer window narrows, it remains to be seen whether Newcastle will follow through with a formal bid, or if Bologna can step up their efforts to land Costa.
