Liverpool have reportedly agreed a £60million deal for Southampton’s Romeo Lavia and if the deal goes ahead then the talented youngster could solve a significant problem for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Reds are certainly in need of a defensive midfielder following Fabinho’s move to Al-Ittihad and 19-year-old Lavia excelled in the Premier League for Southampton last season.

Given how much Liverpool are willing to pay for Lavia, it seems likely that he will go straight into the starting lineup if he joins.

Lavia would therefore form part of an exciting, new-look midfield for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Here’s what a Liverpool side including Lavia could look like.

Goalkeeper – Alisson

Although there has been much change in midfield for Liverpool, there remains a constant in goal, with Alisson now in his sixth season at the club.

Right-back – Trent Alexander-Arnold

Despite suggestions that he could move into midfield on a permanent basis, it seems likely that Trent Alexander-Arnold will continue at right-back for now, although he will be given license to drift infield at times.

Centre-backs – Ibrahima Konate and Virgil Van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk remains a player of crucial importance to Liverpool and Ibrahima Konate now looks to have established himself as his regular partner at the centre of the defence.

Klopp has other options to consider at centre-back including Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.

Left-back – Andy Robertson

Another long-serving member of the Liverpool squad, Robertson has made over 200 appearances for the club since joining from Hull in 2017. Kostas Tsimikas will provide cover.

Defensive midfield – Romeo Lavia

Should he sign, Lavia could quickly establish himself as an important player for Jurgen Klopp’s side, especially given Liverpool’s pressing need for a defensive midfielder.

Attacking midfield – Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister

Lavia could form part of a new-look midfield at Liverpool, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister likely to play prominent roles following their moves from RB Leipzig and Brighton respectively.

Szoboszlai and Mac Allister should provide Liverpool with plenty of creative flair, while Thiago could be required to operate in a slightly deeper position in some games. The likes of Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones will also be hoping for plenty of minutes.

Right wing – Mohamed Salah

Although he was frustrated at being substituted against Chelsea, Mohamed Salah remains a hugely talented player and will be looking for another productive campaign after scoring 19 league goals last season even though Liverpool struggled as a unit.

Striker – Cody Gakpo

There is plenty of competition for places in attack for Liverpool, with Klopp able to call upon Darwin Nunez (who has been given the No 9 shirt) and Diogo Jota. However, Cody Gakpo, who signed from PSV in January, will aim to establish himself as Liverpool’s first-choice striker.

Gakpo scored seven goals in 21 league games for Liverpool last season.

Left wing – Luis Diaz

Luis Diaz commenced the campaign in impressive fashion with a goal against Chelsea and will be aiming to demonstrate that he is fully over his injury problems.

When he is at his best Diaz is capable of causing major problems for opponents with his trickery.
